A Sovereign Gold Bond is a government bond under a Government of India scheme. “Premature redemption” means cashing in the bond before its final maturity date.

What the RBI said

  • Which bonds. SGB 2020-21 Series VII, issued on 20 October 2020.
  • When early redemption is allowed. Under the Government of India notification dated 9 October 2020 that set up this tranche, early redemption may be permitted after the fifth year from the issue date, on a date when interest is payable. The RBI said the date for this series is 19 October 2026, because 20 October 2026 is a holiday.
  • The price. Rs 14,614 per unit of SGB.
  • How the price is set. It is the simple average of the closing price of 999-purity gold on the previous three business days, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA). The RBI said the three days used were 14, 15 and 16 October 2026.

Basis of these figures

All figures and dates are from the RBI press release 2026-2027/1344 dated 16 October 2026, which was read directly on the RBI website. The release does not say how many units remain outstanding, how a holder places a redemption request, or the cut-off for doing so, so this article does not cover them. Holders should check the procedure with the bank, post office or agent through which they hold the bond. This article reports the notified price and does not say whether redeeming is advisable.
