EPF members will be able to see their PF balance, last five transactions and passbook on WhatsApp; small dormant accounts up to Rs 1,000 to be settled automatically

At its 74th Foundation Day on 1 November 2026, EPFO announced a verified WhatsApp service through which members will be able to access PF balance, the latest five transactions and passbook information, and automatic settlement of Aadhaar-verified inoperative accounts with balances up to Rs 1,000, per a PIB release.

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), which runs the provident fund (PF) scheme for salaried workers, has announced the launch of its services on WhatsApp. According to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release dated 1 November 2026, EPF subscribers will be able to see their PF balance, their latest five transactions and passbook information through EPFO’s verified WhatsApp service. The same release says EPFO will settle Aadhaar-verified inoperative accounts with balances up to Rs 1,000 automatically, without the member filing a claim.

The announcements were made at EPFO’s 74th Foundation Day event in New Delhi on 1 November 2026, where Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya presided.

EPFO services on WhatsApp

  • What members can see: PF balance, the latest five transactions and passbook information. The passbook is the record of the contributions made to a member’s PF account and the interest credited.
  • Other help: the release says the service also gives personalised guidance and assistance in completing requirements under the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PMVBRY), the government scheme that pays an incentive to first-time employees in EPF-covered jobs.
  • Purpose, as stated: the release says this makes routine services available on a familiar mobile platform and reduces the need to visit EPFO offices.

The release does not give the WhatsApp number or the steps to start using the service.

Automatic settlement of inoperative accounts

  • Who: subscribers with Aadhaar-verified inoperative EPF accounts whose balance is up to Rs 1,000. The release does not define “inoperative” in this context.
  • What changes: these subscribers do not have to file an individual claim. EPFO will start the settlement itself after prescribed identity and bank-account verification, so that the eligible dues reach the rightful beneficiaries. The release does not describe the verification steps.
  • Scale, as stated: about one lakh (100,000) accounts, involving about Rs 5 crore in total, are expected to benefit.

Other figures in the release

The release also says EPFO has about 8 crore contributing members and 85 lakh pensioners and holds a corpus of nearly Rs 32 lakh crore, and that the average claim settlement time fell to 2.57 days in October 2026.

Basis of these figures

All figures and descriptions above are from the PIB release of 1 November 2026 (Release ID 2331157), opened and read in full for these items, and the PIB pre-event release of 31 October 2026 (Release ID 2330894), which listed both initiatives as launches planned for the Foundation Day.
